This course introduces concepts of geographic information science and skills for using geographic information systems to work with spatial data. The lectures focus on GIS theory and the use of spatial information in various types of analysis. The labs provide hands-on experience with ArcGIS software. Topics to be covered include the collection, manipulation, analysis, interpretation, display, and communication of spatial information; map projection and basic cartographic issues; geographic databases; and geospatial analysis. Examples from a range of applications will illustrate how society is increasingly using spatial data for environmental management.
